Dana V will be Denmark’s largest and only research vessel capable of operating on the oceans and in the Arctic. It will replace the current Dana IV and is expected to be delivered in 2027. Learn more about the vessel, what it will be used for, and the construction process on this website.

Denmark's new research vessel, Dana V, in brief:

Denmark's new ocean-going research vessel, Dana V, is owned by DTU, but can be chartered and used by all Danish research environments and international partners.

The vessel sails under the Danish flag in European Shelf Seas, the North Atlantic and Arctic. It is designed for worldwide operation.

Dana V is expected to be delivered at the end of 2027 and will replace Dana IV, which has sailed the oceans since 1981.

  • Multidisciplinary design: Climate, marine environment and ecosystems, biodiversity, geology, fisheries, and maritime technologies.
  • High ice class (polar class 6) and operational area from the Baltic Sea to the Arctic.
  • Advanced hydroacoustic and optic equipment for all marine science investigations, observations and explorations.
  • Equipped for heavy instruments, e.g. independent observation systems such as airborne, surface and subsurface drones and anchored measuring systems, as well as geological and fisheries sampling gear.
  • Special laboratories, test facilities and ability to handle container-based equipment.
  • Quiet propulsion (silent-R/ICES 209) that does not affect sensors for advanced hydro-acoustic tasks and does not affect marine life.
  • Access to all territorial and demilitarized waters.
  • Official duties: Research and monitoring in accordance with Denmark's obligations to the EU in relation to monitoring of living resources and the environment they are living in.
